At Music Together, we believe that all children are musical. Studies show that, with the enough exposure to music-making experiences at a young age, children can achieve Basic Music Competence (being able to sing in tune and keep a beat) between the ages of 4 and 6. We are all born with a certain amount of musical potential but whether we achieve this potential depends less on our genetics and more on our interaction with music making! Musical development in children is a lot like language development. We need to interact directly with that language and play around with the sounds and babble and experiment with rhythms and movement.
Music Together wants to empower your family to become confident music makers and take those songs you sing in the shower into the living room and get out the pots and pans for a kitchen band and have family dance jams! At Music Together, we provide a safe, fun environment where everyone can feel comfortable participating in music making. This gives each child a rich, informal learning environment to soak up this language called music. At this age, children learn through play and that is what we do at Music Together. We play with music and through our play we achieve competence. At Music Together, you will join a community of music makers and be given the knowledge, ideas and confidence to bring music making into your home.

The VSO School of Music is a state-of-the-art community music school in the heart of downtown Vancouver that teaches the joy of learning, playing and performing music, for all ages and stages.
Lessons, classes and ensembles are offered in classical, jazz and world music, to everyone from young beginners and adult hobbyists to students preparing for a career in music.
The VSO School’s special Early Years Music Program incorporates a range of activities designed to give a ‘brain boost’ to developing young minds with all the proven benefits that come from learning music at an early age. Starting with Parent and Baby Musical Yoga Classes for new parents and newborns, VSO School classes continue through to group Music and Movement classes using the popular Colourstrings approach. Children are then guided through Pathway small group lessons that bring the joy of playing an instrument into your child’s life, with choices of piano, violin, cello, guitar, percussion or singing in a choir. Children aged 5-7 can also attend the Sounds of the Symphony classes, introducing them to the sonic world of the symphony orchestra. Kids who progress to a performing ensemble at the school can even perform on the Orpheum Theatre stage!
The VSO School enjoys a unique relationship with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, which allows students and their families to gain unforgettable musical experiences, including complimentary tickets to selected VSO concerts and a kids-go-free ticket offer. International classical artists in town to perform with the VSO often visit the School to conduct masterclasses and Q&As, and in recent years young VSOSoM students have met and learned from Yo-Yo Ma, Lang Lang, Itzhak Perlman, Midori, Jon Kimura Parker and Emanuel Ax, to name a few! Students also have the opportunity to participate in the annual Future of Excellence competition, where winners in both the junior and senior divisions are given the chance to perform as soloists with the VSO.
Little ones from toddlers to age 6 and their parents are invited to regular FREE Public Instrument Petting Zoos at the school to enjoy a hands-on experience with instruments and to learn more about the school. With over 50 early years music courses scheduled each term, you are bound to find the perfect fit for your child and your schedule. Registration is open all year round, and can be done online, by phone or in person.
Zox of the Forest – Children’s Entertainer & Puppeteer
All is quiet in the forest. There is a beautiful stillness everywhere. Then the birds sing, the tree frogs croak and the baby raccoons look down from their trees. By the foot of a tree stands Zox of the Forest, the magical forest man. In his gunny sack, there are songs, stories, friends, and lots of joy to share with every boy and girl he meets.
Zox of the Forest is a fairy tale character raised in the forest. He is gentle and playful and has the gift to communicate with nature. Zox has many forest friends and for each show is accompanied by a few of them. They may include Wakoo, the Wolf, Ferlin the Fox, Baka, the Beaver, Twigla, the Moose, Mala, the Bat, Oyo, the Octopus, Wakanda, the Blue Whale, Yvandor, the Pteranodon, and Chuma, the Stegosaurus.
David Cooper has been performing as Zox of the Forest for young children for 17 years. He is a passionate performer who creates his own songs, stories, puppet characters, skits and shows. David loves children and is committed to making a difference in their lives through his work.
Zox of the Forest performs shows that are very interactive, playful and imaginative. He does different theme shows about the forest, jungle, ocean, space, dinosaurs, Halloween and Christmas. Each show consists of skits, storytelling, puppetry, music, and juggling. Zox uses different props and bring instruments for the children to play during the music portion of the show.
For birthday parties, after the show, Zox, gives each child either a balloon animal and/or a very colourful drawing (prepared beforehand) of an animal, bird, reptile, insect or dinosaur. Zox also does balloon animals and animal art drawings for fairs and festivals.
