VM Picks: 2017 Summer Bucket List, a Q&A with Britannia Mine Museum

Next time you’re flying along the Sea to Sky on your way to Whistler, stop by the Britannia Mine Museum. You will not be disappointed! It is a kid-friendly, educational but exciting outing for kids and parents. We wanted to hear more about this National Historic Site so we chatted with Britannia Mine Museum.

Give us a brief description of what you are all about.

Across the globe, few, if any, mines are open for the general public to inspect. Britannia is different. Once the biggest copper mine in the British Empire, it’s been preserved as a National Historic site. Now, families climb aboard a rumbling mine train and chug into the dark. Inside and out of the tunnel, the mysteries of mining are explained, thanks to smiling, knowledgeable tour guides. Each one of them likes children, maybe because they never have to say “don’t touch.”

Britannia’s hands-on visit includes the fun of panning for gold (you find it, you keep it). A 14-million dollar transformation makes Britannia visitor-friendly. Because it is spread out over 10 acres, everyone can stretch their legs then re-charge in the cozy and comfortable coffee shop. Come with your family or book a guided group tour.  Trip Advisor gave it 4 and a half stars. Chances are, you’ll agree.

What are three cool things kids (or families) can do there?

1) Ride the underground train

2) Pan for gold

3) Explore 10 acres of historic buildings

How should families prepare for their time there?

Comfy shoes, your camera/phone and be ready for a day of fun! Special note: it is cooler underground. A sweater or jacket is recommended.

What do people typically say after a visit?

“This is a great mine that is fun and super educational. You tour both the mine shaft on a train and the actual facility where the copper was processed. This is so much fun! All ages loved it!”

“Our guide was very good – giving us facts in a fun way and also going into the stories of people that lived and worked there. … Plenty of exhibits around to look at and investigate and you can even have a go at panning. Kids would love this place.”
