30 Essential Vancouver Jewellery Designers: Susie Wickstead of Indigo Star

Jewellery designer Susie Wickstead of Indigo Star was born and raised in North Vancouver, where she currently lives with her husband and their two children. When she’s not playing with her kids, she can be found designing and creating in her studio.

Why did you get into jewellery design?

I began making jewellery as a hobby while I was in medical school; I found it very therapeutic and a terrific creative outlet. My first designs were hand-wrapped crystal bobby pins made from Swarovski Crystal beads, which I loved working with because of all the beautiful colors and the magnificent sparkle of the beads. I gave these away to friends and family as gifts, and they wanted more! So I created more pieces and came up with a jewellery line and the stores I visited loved them. I realized, then, that I didn’t want to be a doctor – my true passion was jewellery design. That’s when I launched Indigo Star and began making jewellery full time.

Tell us a bit about your company.

When I began designing jewellery I started off doing simple beadwork, and Indigo Star was operating out of a single room in my house. Once I began working with silver, I enrolled in a silversmithing course so I could learn how to solder and create my own sterling silver jewellery, and I quickly outgrew my “home” work space. Now I work out of my own design studio in North Vancouver, where every piece of Indigo Star jewellery is designed and carefully handcrafted, using sterling silver or 14k gold fill.  Each piece is then lovingly adorned with genuine Swarovski Crystals, because I just love the sparkle and shine of these lovely crystals in all their beautiful shapes, colors, and sizes. In fact, my love of Swarovski Crystals has led to an amazing partnership: last year Indigo Star became a branding partner with Crystallized – Swarovski Elements – the Crystal Elements Brand of Swarovski. This partnership ensures that Indigo Star will always be on the cutting edge of current design trends and will continue to create quality jewellery pieces that inspire and shine.

How would you characterize your style?

My love of all things that sparkle and shine is definitely reflected in my designs – pun intended! And I love colour. I would say my jewellery is contemporary and versatile, not overstated. I like to think of my designs as a way of adding a bit of allure and light to every moment in life.

Who are your clients?

My clients are women of all ages and demographic, really.  They are women who are looking for a unique, shimmering piece of jewellery that is affordable and fun, and one that they will love wearing day after day.

What do you think moms should know about your jewellery?

As a busy mom of two young kids, I know how hectic a mom’s day can get and that we don’t always have time to “dress up”. When I’m designing, I’m usually thinking: “Is this practical? Would I wear this?” The Indigo Star jewellery line is versatile, affordable, and perfect for everyday; you can put on a sparkly necklace or pair of earrings before dashing out of the house in your jeans, and you can dress it up when you go out for a night on the town. No matter what the occasion, I want women to look and feel fabulous wearing Indigo Star jewellery.

Where can people buy your jewellery?

Online at www.indigostar.ca and at select boutiques and galleries throughout the Lower Mainland (see website for retailers).

Anything else to add?

For me, the most humbling thing about being a jewellery designer is seeing a complete stranger on the street and she’s wearing one of my designs! It’s all about gratitude; I love what I do and I am extremely grateful that I get to share it with the women who wear my jewellery.
