30 Essential Vancouver Jewellery Designers: Jacqui Kerr of Refine Jewellery Design

Through self-taught jewellery explorations and her Jewellery Art and Design studies at Vancouver Community College, designer Jacqui Kerr of Refine Jewellery Design has been fine tuning her jewellery design skills for over 10 years – and is always evolving. Take a peek at who she was a year ago, and you’d see now that everything has changed: “I am a mom now and more inspired than ever before…”

Why did you get into jewellery design?

In my early twenties, I had a love affair with making jewellery from found objects, beads, and vintage buttons.  This eventually led me to Vancouver to study Jewellery Art and Design and I discovered the endless possibilities in metal.  A decade later the passion and dedication is stronger than ever.

Tell us a bit about your company.

The name Refine speaks.  I aim high and place great importance on making simple, timeless design for women to cherish and feel great about wearing.  It’s feel-good jewellery in more than one way: it’s about supporting your local designer and having a minimal footprint.  Refine uses minimal materials giving a lovely lightweight feel while never compromising the visual impact of a piece.  Fans of Refine can also look forward to a new capsule collection in the works…100% recycled.

How would you characterize your style?

Breezy and confidant, refined, natural, playful and sophisticated.  Strong emphasis on line.  Unexpected.

Who are your clients?

Women of all ages with fine taste and a keen eye for detail.  Women than know sophistication and playfulness go hand in hand.

What do you think moms should know about your jewellery?

As a new mom myself, I have had first hand experience for the past year with day-to-day jewellery wear.  I’ve been sticking with sweet little studs (my new leaf studs or tiny chevron studs are a great choice), my rectangle or triangle with pearl tension earrings (they lock right in but when yanked they come out with ease!) or my signature kite tension earrings (another locking mechanism…yes, they are a little longer but not too hoop like for little fingers to get caught).  I’ve also been wearing shorter style necklaces with interesting detailed pendants that slide; perfect for little hands to finger and admire at cuddle time.  Moms can also feel good knowing that their piece by Refine is completely handmade with the utmost care.
